Flea Control
For active flea
infestation, treat all animals with Frontline monthly for at
least 6 months. In some cases, you may have to apply every 2 to
3 weeks (consult your veterinarian first).
We also have a
chewable tablet, Comfortis, for month-long flea protection.
It starts killing fleas in 30 minutes. This pill is FDA
approved for dogs. It is a faster method to eliminate
fleas before they start laying eggs. (An adult flea can
lay up to 50 eggs a day!) It is recommended to give
Comfortis with food for best results.
For cats we recommend
a topical product called Assurity. Assurity kills 98 to
100% of fleas in the first 12 hours...before they can lay eggs.
It lasts a full month and one dose size is effective for cats of
all sizes.
Home: Vacuum (with
beater bar) every 3 days for four weeks. We recommend that you
flea bomb your house…following the manufacturer’s instructions
very carefully. Depending on which product you use, you may
have to repeat in 30 days.
Yard: Spraying the
yard with a biological spray (nematode) every two to three
months. This has been shown to be very effective and
environmentally friendly. **Malathion or Diazinon are not
helpful and can be toxic to your pet.
Automobile: If your pet has been in your
car, we recommend that you spray your vehicle with a product
that an IGR (Insect Growth Regulator) such as Vet-Kem Siphotrol
Area Spray, and repeat in 2 weeks.
